Community Based Learning
Running the cafe at the Alice Charity
The Alice Charity is based in Newcastle Under Lyme. The College works closely with the Charity and groups of learners are at the Charity every week. One task is to run the Charity Cafe one day a week. The students are learning how to prepare and cook healthy meals, to take orders, serve customers and clean up afterwards. They are learning useful skills they can use at home and will take with them as they begin their adult lives.
Shopping for Residents of a Local Care Home
Each week our young people visit a local Care Home. They take orders for shopping in local supermarkets. They are responsible for buying what the residents have ordered. They are responsible for managing money and giving change. The young people are learning to read shopping lists, look for and find the items on the shelves, scan and pay for the items. The young people are also building good relationships with the residents learning to speak to different people. They are learning the value of volunteering and making the difference to other peoples' lives.
